Implantation refers to the process in which the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterus lining and starts producing hormones that signal the body about the start of the pregnancy. Normal implantation happens during the menstrual cycle when an egg is released from the ovaries and travels through one of the fallopian tubes to the uterus. But some issues, including male factor infertility, ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, and other unexplained infertility issues, hinder normal implantation and highlight the need for ART treatments like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves implanting sperm directly into the uterus. It increases the concentration of sperm and also reduces the time of insemination, This can be done to increase the chances of fertilization and pregnancy in couples experiencing fertility challenges or to use donor sperm.

Egg implantation usually takes 6-12 days after the IUI procedure. Meanwhile, it is advised to remain in constant touch with your fertility expert and follow all the tips to improve the success rate of IUI. and keep aware of what happens after IUI day by day

How Long Does It Take For The Egg To Implant After IUI?

Implantation happens within 6-12 days after the IUI procedure. The timeline further depends on the time fertilized egg travels to the uterus through the fallopian tube.

What Are The Symptoms/Sign Of Implantation After IUI?

Implantation symptoms after IUI are much similar to early pregnancy symptoms, so it may be difficult for the patient to identify the same. However, some signs of implantation after IUI are:

  • Cramping or Implantation Bleeding
  • Increase in Basal body Temperature- Basal body temperature tends to increase around implantation and may be at the peak after implantation.
  • Changes in the sense of Smell and appetite
  • Changes in cervical mucus
  • Tender breasts
  • Fatigue
  • Positive pregnancy test

These all are general symptoms and may vary from individual to individual. Aastha Fertility Experts regularly check all their patients, recording all the symptoms their body is experiencing for increased pregnancy chances.

What Are The Risks Of Implantation After IUI?

Although IUI is considered a safe procedure with a 7% to 10% success rate per cycle, some risks might be associated with the implantation process after IUI.

Implantation Failure

Failure happens when the fertilized does not attach properly to the uterus lining. It can be due to abnormal embryo development or in-responsiveness of the uterus during implantation.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy happens when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, possibly in the fallopian tube.

Multiple Pregnancies

More than one pregnancy is one of the risks of implantation after IUI, and it poses severe life threats to both baby and the mother.

Side-Effects of Medications

Medications given during IUI for ovulation-inducing purposes may also cause side effects, including mood swings, hot flashes, nausea, and headaches.
