IVF Procedure Step By Step: The Complete Guide

IVF Procedure Step By Step

In Vitro Fertilization, also called IVF, is a scientific procedure practiced to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and support the conception of a child. IVF is an optimum opportunity for couples who could not conceive naturally through sexual intercourse, single woman who wants to be a mother, or couples who don’t want to pass their genetic defects to the baby.

IVF is the most commonly known type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). ART is basically any medical procedure used to treat infertility. There are many other procedures in ART like in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), cryopreservation of gametes or embryos, or the use of fertility medication. But IVF is the best-suited ART technology for women who have a blocked or damaged fallopian tube.

This method is also very helpful for women with endometriosis, ovulation problems, or unexplained infertility issues. If you also have infertility issues and have decided to start down the road of infertility treatment to end all your misery; you probably have many enigmas in your mind regarding IVF treatment. In this blog, we will help you know everything that one should know about IVF treatment.

What is In-Vitro Fertilisation?

In-Vitro Fertilization

IVF is a method of fertilization outside a woman’s body using a medical procedure. In this process, mature eggs are retrieved from one of a woman’s ovaries and fertilized with the sperm of a man in a petri dish. Then the fertilized egg or eggs are transferred to the uterus.

The first IVF baby was successfully born on July 25, 1978, at Oldham and District General Hospital in Manchester, England. The first test-tube baby Louise Joy Brown was born to parents Lesley and Peter Brown. Leslie had an infertility issue due to a blocked fallopian tube. In 1977 she underwent the then-experimental IVF procedure. A mature egg from one of her ovaries was removed and fused with his husband’s sperm to form an embryo in a laboratory. Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards were the doctors who performed the IVF procedure on Leslie.

Many people considering IVF always have this worry about how much IVF treatment cost In India?

Actually, there is no fixed cost for this treatment. As the cost varies depending on the treatment of the medications and fertility drugs prescribed, and it also depends on the treatment option suggested by the IVF specialist

So, depending on the treatment, the cost will vary, but for estimation, we can say that cost of IVF in India is between 90,000 to 200,000.

The different kinds of IVF treatment are

  • IVF Cycle (with Self Egg): In this treatment couple’s own eggs and sperms are used for the treatment.
  • IVF Cycle (with Donor Egg): In this treatment, the woman uses another woman’s egg because of infertility or low-quality eggs.
  • IVF with ICSI: ICSI is known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. This treatment is used when males have complicated infertility issues like blockage of the epididymal.
  • IVF Treatment with VEA: This treatment is done when there is not enough sperm found in the semen, and anastomosis is done to remove the blockage.
  • IVF with Frozen Semen and Embryo: In this treatment, frozen sperms are used.

IVF Procedure Step-by-Step

IVF has become one of the most renowned ART technology as it has bought hope into the lives of many couples by providing them with the gratification of being parents. Let us go through the step-by-step process of IVF technology that is helping so many people to have a child.

Step 1: The doctor will prescribe some fertility drugs to the woman to boost her egg production so that her body will produce more than one egg per month because this process requires more than one egg. She will regularly receive transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests to check her ovaries and monitor her hormone levels.

Step 2: In this step, a surgical needle will be inserted through the woman’s vagina to the ovaries for the retrieval of eggs containing the follicle by suction. This procedure is called follicular aspiration.

Step 3: The male sperm then goes through a high-speed wash and spin cycle to find the healthiest ones in this step.

Step 4: Now insemination is done. In this step, the eggs are combined with the sperm from the semen sample in a petri dish. The sperms fertilize the eggs overnight.

Step 5: The petri dish is kept under observation to check whether the egg is dividing or developing. In this stage, the embryos also undergo genetic testing.

Step 6: The woman will receive another medication to prep the lining of her uterus to receive the embryos. About three to five days after fertilization, the doctor will place the embryos in her uterus using a catheter.

Step 7: Multiple embryos are transferred back into the woman, hoping that at least one will implant itself in the lining of her uterus and begin to develop.

Sometimes more than one embryo ends up implanting; that is why multiple births are common in women who use IVF.

IVF also treats infertility issues like bulky uterus, oligospermia, and symptoms of low sperm count.

Side Effects of IVF Treatment

Before moving forward with in-vitro fertilization, be aware that it comes with risks and IVF side effects. IVF increases the risk of multiple births if more than one embryo is transferred to your uterus. Multiple births are known to increase the risk of premature delivery and low birth weight. They also bring higher health risks for the mother, including severe blood loss, bleeding complications, extended hospital stay, and bed rest.

Also, a class of drugs that blocks the effects of estrogen, which causes ovulation is used to treat hormonal imbalance and infertility, by simulating a natural cycle. The most common side effects of these drugs are acne, headaches, weight gain, and nausea. It can also cause loss of bone density but is not a long-term problem for people on a short course for fertility treatment.

How is IVF different from IUI?

IUI is another kind of artificial insemination. The basic difference between IUI and IVF is that IUI is a natural kind of pregnancy in which fertilization occurs inside the body. Whereas, in IVF, fertilization takes place in a lab in a petri dish with the help of advanced technologies.

Let’s go through the IUI procedure step by step:

  • Doctors wait for the woman’s ovulation naturally, and if this doesn’t happen, then medication is prescribed to her to deal with and stimulate ovulation.
  • Sperms are washed, and the healthiest ones are chosen for insertion.
  • Sperms are inserted using a catheter into her uterus through her vagina, passing through her cervix area. This process is sometimes painful as cramps may occur during the procedure.

The last step is to wait for the good news, but the chances of getting pregnant via IUI are less than IVF. The estimated cost of IUI exclusive of simulation medication cost is Rs. 12000 – 17000. It is cheaper than IVF, but the success rate of IVF is much better than IUI.
